Convincing John: A childhood lesson in Media Spin

I was reminded today somehow of a segment in an HBO episode of Fraggle Rock. One of the Fraggles has decided that it is wrong to eat doozer towers and wants Convincing John to come and convince everyone that it is wrong...

Convincing John comes to them and "Preachify's" telling them exactly what they want to hear and making some almost nonesense but very diversionary points for the wrongness of Doozer Tower eating...

Now then listen to me Fraggles.
Give your Fraggle mouths a-waggle.
You can chew a Doozer tower till you're blue (you're blue).

But there's a mighty day a coming,
When the food will hit your tummy,
And you'll know that what I'm telling you is true (is true).

So if you want to get ahold of something extra good as gold,
You gotta stop and give a thought to what you do (what you do).
Never eat another tower till I tell you what it's doing to you.

Well you eat a Doozer tower,
And it's as pretty as a flower,
And a flower's what you pick up in a field (a field),
But the field can have a hole,

And a Gorg can come along to find a meal (a meal),
And he can pack you in a sack,
And you can try to scramble back,
But then you'll never, ever, ever get free (get free),
'Cause every time you eat a tower you'll be shut up for eternity.

And if you want to hear a story,
That is horrible and gory,
Let me tell you about a Fraggle I knew (I knew).

He was sitting on a byway,
Eating up a Doozer highway,
In the way a hungry Fraggle will do (will do).

Then he started in a-changing and he started rearranging,
And I promise you this story is true (is true).
By the time it was done he was a human being through and through.

Just for you.

Later on, they decide that it is ok to eat dozer towers, they ask Convincing John to come back and convince them that it is ok.

Now listen to me Fraggles.

You can starve yourself until you turn blue (turn blue).

Your checks

When next you order checks, have only the initials of your first name printed. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks
Never have your social security number printed on your check. You can always add it if necessary.
Put your work phone number on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address.
When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.
Your credit cards

Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED". See update.
Your wallet

Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. While you’re at it, make a photocopy of your passport.
Next to each card, write down the toll free number to call if the card is stolen. Don’t forget the number to the Registry of Motor Vehicles
Keep the photocopy in a safe place. Thieves work fast. The key to stopping them –and limiting your damage - is to cancel cards quickly.

PFR Lyrics... a great focal point for Christians

In listening to one of my favorite bands the other day, a particular set of lyrics stuck out to me as being a great summation of my faith:
